Whew...things are certainly heating up. Last week, Dell agreed to acquire Ocarina Networks for an undisclosed amount. As I mentioned to Chris Mellor at the Register, this was a good indication of how primary storage is, "moving from 'bump in the wire' compression/deduplication solutions to integrated capacity optimization".
And, yesterday, IBM announced the acquisition of Storwize. This is another great proof point for primary data optimization...
There's one thing that has become apparent in the storage universe over the last several years. People don't want their data messed with! Time and time again, some new vendor will come to market with a shiny new appliance that will promise to solve some major storage management challenge. However, the catch is that all the data must be routed through this nifty new appliance. This appliance does some voodoo magic and voila, the data has been fixe...
In my previous post, I highlighted the massive savings that can be realized by leveraging deduplication technology with virtual server environments. In this post, I'll take it one step further and discuss virtual desktops.
While virtual servers are approaching deployment numbers in the hundreds of servers in larger enterprises, deployments of virtual desktops are in the thousands and in some cases tens of thousands of images being deployed! So, ...
As I discussed in my previous post, in the last month we have seen announcements or speculation on deduplication from IBM (speculation on Storwize acquisition), HP (StoreOnce) and EMC (Viper). Yesterday, Dell jumped into the fray with the announced acquisition of Ocarina. Here is my view on why the action is occurring and with such velocity.

Usually around election time the old theme 'it's the Economy stupid' gets hauled out. Well, ...
One of the key findings from a Gartner report from late last year, (Virtual Machines and Market Share Through 2012) stated that 'by year-end 2010, enterprises with 100 to 999 employees will have a higher penetration of virtual machines deployed than the Global 500. Concurrently, there will be a growing percentage of small businesses that leverage virtual machines provided by cloud-computing service providers; this will become a major trend in thr...
On July 9 2010, John Lechleiter, CEO of Eli Lilly and Company wrote an editorial for the Wall Street Journal, entitled America's Growing Innovation Gap in which he cited a study (completed by the Information and Technology and Innovation Foundation) which concludes the US had slipped to sixth place among the top 40 nations for innovative competitiveness and was dead last for 'rate of change of innovations capacity' over the last 10 years.
That s...
Last night, the Miami Heat pulled off what many thought would not be possible. They completed their version of the 'Dream Team.' LeBron James' decision to join Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade has positioned the team to become, as Pat Riley started talking about already, a 'Dynasty.'
Let's take a look at what happened here and how this type of scenario plays out in the world of storage.
* The Cleveland Cavaliers had 'the King', LeBron James, for 7 yea...
In an article in The Register on July 7, Chris Mellor recalled his discussion with "Mike" a senior storage guy in a European enterprise. The gist of Mike's position is that there are unknown risks that inhibit him from going outside of the incumbent storage suppliers to acquire storage technology. Interestingly, he does acknowledge that there are known risks with the incumbents too! So, it's more the devil you know versus the one you don't....
