Dear Colleague,
Fall is in the air. Soon the trees will start turning colors and the air will get cooler. Along with the weather change, we begin to see different sports commanding our attention. Baseball is entering the playoffs, football is now in full force, and hockey players are just sharpening their blades on their skates. Seems like sports are everywhere! Just like sports have taken over the airwaves, we've seen the same trend with data optimization. We recently announced an expanded API for Albireo OEM Data Optimization software allowing for "Dedupe Everywhere."
Originally built to address all block, file, object and unified storage systems, Albireo has now expanded to uniquely integrate with any application, operating system or storage product, including new Solid State Drive (SSD) technology, within a vendor's portfolio.
"Deduplication, as long as it is done economically and efficiently, has to be about as close to a 'no brainer' as one can get in IT. With Albireo, Permabit has a supremely effective and flexible tool —one that can apply deduplication end-to-end and everywhere. It can better enable the Cloud….and can just as easily better enable the use and adoption of solid state storage."
~ Steve Duplessie, Founder and Senior Analyst, ESG
Along
with this announcement, both Tom and Jered have been very busy speaking at various industry events. Tom was a panel member on the "Disruptive Technologies Panel" at the ExecEvent in Santa Clara on September 15th. He also participated on the "Data Center Panel" at the America's Growth Capital (AGC) Annual East Coast Emerging Growth Conference on September 19th.
Meanwhile, Jered presented "Understanding Your Primary Storage Optimization Options" at the Storage Developer's Conference on September 21st and will participate on the "Primary Data Optimization: What It Should Be Panel" at Storage Networking World on October 10th.
Also this summer, Enterprise Strategy Group Lab (ESG) validated record breaking performance rates and scalability for Albireo. With a patented hybrid indexing technology, Permabit Albireo reached industry leading performance of over 400 GB/second in a test environment, surpassing by 2.5 times the previous 77GB/sec performance number (based on 64 KB chunk size) announced in October 2010.
To top it all off, back in June, we were Awarded Four New Patents increasing our portfolio to 23 patents in deduplication, grid storage, and data protection. The patents cover deduplication and records retention, including data deduplication for secure data sharing in the cloud. US Patent No. 7,734,595 covers the use of a deduplicating storage repository to allow out-of-band communication between multiple users of data. US Patent Nos. 7,747,583 and 7,930,315 cover retention of historical records in a data storage repository. US Patent No. 7,912,855 covers a data storage repository where deduplication is used to reduce bandwidth requirements by allowing data already in the repository to be stored again by digital fingerprint.
One thing that has become very clear over the last several months is that deduplication technology has moved beyond just a feature in a backup product to a "must have" core competency in any layer. If you can imagine storing only one copy of data, at its inception, and keep only one copy throughout its lifecycle, how much storage can you save? How much network bandwidth can you save? How much power can you save? How much remote storage can you save? How many writes can you save writing to storage such as SSDs? The savings are multiplicative. It's also very clear to us that based on the companies we're speaking with, nobody really needs to debate whether dedupe is a viable technology anymore. It's now just a race of how quickly they can incorporate it into their platforms and whether it can scale and meet the performance demands. As we have learned over the last decade, you can't just build dedupe and ship it overnight!
We are very excited about the new creative ways companies are looking to integrate Albireo into their products. Keep an eye on Permabit this fall; you'll be seeing some very interesting announcements!
As always, we invite your comments and thoughts about these important storage topics online at Permabit on FaceBook, Permabit on Twitter, or Permabit on Linkedin. |
