Dear Colleague,
Welcome! In this edition we will look at how 2010 ended and review what some of the industry pundits are predicting 2011 will have in store for us.
On December 13, 2010, Permabit announced the latest results of Wikibon’s Capacity Optimization Ratio Effectiveness (CORE) analysis against industry-leading data optimization solutions. Wikibon named Permabit’s next-generation Albireo solution with GX technology the clear winner in both performance and return on investment for IO–intensive workloads.
“Interest among Wikibon users for primary storage optimization is exploding. To maximize ROI across the application portfolio, our belief is that primary optimization technologies should be embedded, have minimal application performance impacts and apply to both file and block storage. Permabit’s Albireo technology meets these criteria and has set a new bar for ROI. In our view it has the potential to redefine the landscape for primary storage optimization.”
~ Dave Vellante, co-founder of Wikibon
2010 also found many reflecting on the effects that data deduplication technology has on the storage industry as it progresses from backup use cases to primary storage optimization.
From CRN, The 10 Biggest Storage Stories Of 2010, #9 on their list was: Dedupe Of Primary Storage Gets Its Chance.
Ray Lucchesi, in his RayOnStorage blog, Top 10 storage technologies over the last decade. #3 on his list was data deduplication.
Looking forward to 2011, here’s what many others had to say.
Dave Raffo, SearchStorage.com, 2010 data storage news topped by storage array M&A, cloud storage listed as # 5: Data shrinkage inches beyond backup.
“As expected, data deduplication accelerated its move into the mainstream for backup in 2010, and major vendors enhanced their products.
But there was also a flurry of action around primary data reduction, deduplication and compression. IBM acquired Storwize and Dell bought Ocarina Networks less than two weeks apart in July, and Permabit scored OEM deals with BlueArc and Xiotech for its embedded deduplication software.”
Tony Asaro, of Voices of IT, in SearchStorage.com Data storage trends 2011:
Predictions of hot data storage technologies “The other one that I think is really important, and we’re just beginning to see this come out now, is data deduplication and compression for primary storage.
Again, the problem is that we’re just consuming so much capacity. It’s taking up so much floor space, that even if you can get a factor of 4-to-1 [reduction] on primary, you’re going to be saving significantly.”
The December issue of Storage Magazine article listing Hot technologies for 2011 placed at #2, Data reduction in primary storage.
Dave Simpson, InfoStor, Top Five Storage Technologies for 2011 listed at #2: Data reduction (data deduplication and/or compression) for primary storage.
“Just like data deduplication for secondary storage swept the market and became mainstream over the last couple years, data reduction for primary storage will gain traction in end-user adoption over the next two years.”
George Crump, Storage Switzerland, Storage Industry Consolidation And Deduplication stated:
“In short customers want a single deduplication method that works across platforms. It’s the only logical way to leverage deduplication so its full advantages can be realized. The challenge for each of these storage companies is figuring out how to deliver that capability to their users. The answer could be a deduplication API set like Permabit’s Albireo engine that we discuss in our article Storage Vendors, The Stakes Are Raised.”
To wrap up with a recent quote from Chris Mellor at the Register in his article The cost of not deduping
“In our homes and offices duplication of paper-stored information is a fact of life and we don’t even think about it. In the digital world such duplication is a money-wasting sin and we should and must think about it, so we can spend our money where it can do good instead of being poured down a drain.”
As you can see, 2011 is shaping up to be the year of dedupe for primary storage!
