Permabit Albireo Outperforms All Data Optimization Technologies in Wikibon CORE Testing

Albireo Technology Achieves Highest Performance Score, Best Return on Investment Delivering Real-time Deduplication

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — December 13, 2010 — Permabit Technology Corporation, the leader in the development and delivery of Data Optimized Storage, today announced the results of Wikibon’s Capacity Optimization Ratio Effectiveness (CORE) analysis against industry-leading data optimization solutions. Wikibon named Permabit’s next-generation Albireo solution with GX technology the clear winner in both performance and return on investment for IO–intensive workloads. Recent lab analysis by ESG confirmed that Albireo performed at 77 GB/sec, breaking an industry performance record while using 64 KB data blocks, hardware-based SHA-256 hashing in a 16 node grid configuration.

Wikibon’s CORE evaluation method analyzes seven variables: storage capacity, percent capacity reduction, cost of solution, cost of latency, value of capacity reduced, workload IOs/second and optimization overhead seconds/IO. The Wikibon analysis calculates a total CORE score which evaluates the benefits of storage optimization against the costs. A CORE score of 1 signifies that the benefits equal the costs. The Wikibon analysis assessed NetApp deduplication at a CORE score of 3.0, and then at 2.6 when combined with its new compression technology, while Permabit Albireo deduplication software achieved a record-setting score of 254.

Albireo is the industry’s first and only OEM-embedded data optimization solution delivering real-time primary data deduplication. It was created for hardware and software storage OEMs seeking to improve their competitive position and improve margins with next-generation data optimization. Permabit enables its partners to deploy sub-file deduplication technology with no impact to storage performance while ensuring data integrity. Albireo does not alter data and operates completely out of the data read path; a combination which is unique in the storage industry. Announced partners currently include NAS and block storage companies, such as BlueArc and Xiotech Corporation.

Supporting Quotes:

“Interest among Wikibon users for primary storage optimization is exploding. To maximize ROI across the application portfolio, our belief is that primary optimization technologies should be embedded, have minimal application performance impacts and apply to both file and block storage. Permabit’s Albireo technology meets these criteria and has set a new bar for ROI. In our view it has the potential to redefine the landscape for primary storage optimization.”
Dave Vellante, co-founder of Wikibon

“Wikibon’s findings show how Albireo High Performance Data Optimization software delivers orders of magnitude higher performance and efficiency when compared to first generation data optimization solutions. These characteristics, combined with Albireo’s ability to scale upward, are crucial for giving our OEMs the competitive edge in this industry.”
Jered Floyd, Chief Technology Officer of Permabit
