Mike has a point!

In an article in The Register on July 7, Chris Mellor recalled his discussion with "Mike" a senior storage guy in a European enterprise. The gist of Mike's position is that there are unknown risks that inhibit him from going outside of the incumbent storage suppliers to acquire storage technology.  Interestingly, he does acknowledge that there are known risks with the incumbents too!  So, it's more the devil you know versus the one you don't....

Compression and Dedupe: Redux

Yesterday The Storage Alchemist at Storwize posted a complaint about Tom's discussion of compression and deduplication. We certainly aren't savaging compression technologies -- I think perhaps it's clearer to consider our points not so much as a criticism of compression, but as a list of concerns regarding bump-in-the-wire optimization appliances. We absolutely agree with Steve the Alchemist that data compression and data deduplication are two te...

A ‘Rock’ Star is Born

In Jered's latest blog post, he highlights the announcement we made this week of AlbireoTM High Performance Data Optimization Software. You may have noticed the industry buzz this has created.  Here's what some of the analysts have had to say. What I would like to highlight is the other star that was 'born' with this announcement -- that is Jered himself! Move over Pink, here comes Jered Floyd - our very own rock star. Ever since Jered conceiv...

Primary Storage Deduplication is the Future

Until now, I've chosen to stay out of the little tempest in a teapot that's going on over at Chuck Hollis' blog, but it doesn't seem to be quieting down. He basically says that Data dedupe has no place on primary storage, which flies in the face of where the dedupe market is going... but it's not a bad position to take when you're company makes a lot of money off of very expensive primary storage. Their biggest NAS competitor took the bait, an...

All Deduplication is Not the Same

In a short few years deduplication technologies have become commonplace, and in not too much longer will become a requirement for any new storage purchase. When everyone offers deduplication, are they all the same? Definitely not! Most of the deduplication technologies out there only perform in very specific use cases like backup, and cannot handle general purpose data storage. The biggest dichotomy in deduplication is dedupe for backup, be ...

Great time to be an IT pro and storage buyer

Tom Cook, Permabit CEO Hello. I'm Tom Cook, CEO & President of Permabit Technology Corporation. Jered Floyd has been doing many blog posts regarding technology trends for the storage industry. I’m jumping in now to provide a bit of a different perspective. I’ll write about topics and issues I hear about when talking with enterprise IT and storage leaders. Despite the increasing pressures of managing the explosive growth of digital inform...
